iPage VS DreamHost

iPage VS Dreamhost

DreamHost and iPage are both a different kind of web host. That is, in their policies and the way they do things at the home office. They are not typical in the sense that they both have invested in wind energy certificates and practice “green” energy conservation methods to reduce their carbon footprint. Both companies have been in business 12 years or more and have a client base leading most others in the industry with 800,000 going to DreamHost and over 1 million to iPage. With these two web hosting giants going head-to-head who will pull through as a winner with a recommendation? Read on to find out.

IPage offers a single shared server hosting plan packed with features for only $3.50 per month. DreamHost has a similar plan for $8.95 per month, and new customers will want to notice that the company charges extra for “unlimited” support.

DreamHost also offers hosting plans for virtual private server hosting (VPS), dedicated server, and colocation at their data center. All plans are very affordable compared to industry averages. As an extra service to the non-profit charitable organizations, DreamHost also offers a free hosting plan to those groups who qualify.

Both companies offer a very generous money-back guarantee with DreamHost giving 97 days money-back, and iPage offering an anytime money back guarantee.

Products and Services

Both companies offer marketing help, with iPage taking the edge with over $250 in additional marketing offers, and only $75 from DreamHost. Both companies also offer “Green” certifications for their clients to post on their websites due to their efforts in purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). Each company will also register a new domain for free with account signup, but DreamHost will pay the domain renewal fee during the life of a customer’s continued account membership.

IPage provides their customers with site building tools as well as extra website analysis tools, and they offer a free domain registration for new customers. DreamHost, as mentioned, provides a great service to the non-profit industry by offering free web hosting to charitable groups. Plus, DreamHost has developed an exceptional control panel for their clients compared to the vDeck panel offered by iPage.

Web Hosting Features

Comparing the shared server packages side-by-side shows that they line up fairly evenly. Both offer unlimited disk space, bandwidth, email accounts, MySQL databases, and hosted domains. Both give full support for scripting and software, as well as support for multi-media, and shopping cart software.

Customer Service

IPage takes the edge on customer service with 24/7 telephone and online chat support. DreamHost offers 24 hour support but only through online support ticket submission. Both have plenty of online articles with DreamHost offering a “Wiki” version of knowledgebase. IPage has a more extensive knowledgebase, as well as great video tutorials and FAQs.

These industry giants are tough to compare side-by-side. DreamHost has a great scalable set of hosting plans from shared servers to dedicated servers. And their award-winning control panel is an excellent bonus for their clients. However, iPage continues to have better prices and much better and accessible customer service. For their customer-friendly approach, iPage gets our recommendation.
